# Keyboard shortcuts

The keys and mouse moves of Luw\.ai Studio, grouped by what you're doing, from picking a tool to walking through your building.

You can do everything in Luw\.ai Studio with the mouse, but a handful of keys make it much faster. This page lists them by task. A shorter version lives inside the Studio too: open the **Settings** tab and, under **Preferences**, click **Keyboard shortcuts**.

A few things to know first:

* `Cmd/Ctrl` means `Cmd` on a Mac and `Ctrl` on Windows and Linux.
* Single-letter keys do nothing while your cursor is in a text box, so you can name a room "Bedroom" without switching tools. `Cmd/Ctrl + S` is the exception and always saves.
* Many keys only matter in a certain situation, for example while you're drawing or when something is selected. The hint panel on the right of the canvas always shows the ones that work right now.

## Pick a tool or mode

| Key | What it does |
| ----- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `V` | Back to **Select**, the everyday mode for picking and moving things. |
| `B` | Opens the **Build** tab with the wall tool ready to draw a **Rectangle** room. |
| `F` | Opens the **Items** tab, ready to place furniture. |
| `P` | Starts painting, with the **Paint** tab open. |
| `Z` | Draws a zone. See [Zones](/luw.ai-studio/building/zones.md). |
| `M` | Measures, using whichever measurement type you picked last. |
| `X` | **Delete** mode: click anything to remove it. |
| `G` | Sculpts the terrain (switches to the site). See [Site and parcel](/luw.ai-studio/building/site-and-parcel.md). |
| `C` | **Point and ask**, in the 3D view: tap it and the mode stays on until you tap `C` again or press `Esc`; hold it to point only while the key is down. See [Point and ask](#point-and-ask) below. |
| `1` | Switches to the site: the lot, its outline and the terrain. |
| `2` | Switches to the building: everything on the level you're on. |
| `Esc` | Stops what you're doing. In the middle of drawing it drops only the unfinished part and keeps the tool; press it again to return to **Select**. |

## Edit, save and undo

| Key | What it does |
| ----------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + Z` | Undo. During a drag or a placement it cancels that action instead. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Z` | Redoes what you just undid. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + S` | Saves the project right away instead of waiting for autosave. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + C` | Copies the selection. You can paste it on another level, into another project or in another browser tab. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + X` | Cuts the selection: copies it, then removes it here. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + V` | Pastes. The copy hangs under the pointer until you click to put it down; `Esc` cancels. |
| `Delete` or `Backspace` | Deletes the selection. If ten or more things are selected, the Studio asks first. |
| `R` | Turns the selection 45° clockwise. For a door or window, flips it to face the other way. |
| `T` | Turns the selection 45° anticlockwise. |
| `E` | Opens or closes the selected door, window or other moving part, such as a cabinet drawer. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + G` | Groups the selected objects so that a click on any of them picks up the whole group. Groups last for the current session only and aren't saved with the project. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + G` | Breaks that group up again. The objects stay selected. |

With several objects selected, `R` and `T` turn them all together around the middle of the selection.

## Draw and place

These work while you're drawing walls, fences, slabs and the like, or placing an item, door or window.

| Key | What it does |
| ---------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `Shift` (tap) | Changes the snapping mode. Depending on the tool you get **Grid**, **Lines** (lines and corners of what's already there), **Angles** (fixed angles) and **Off**. |
| `Shift` (hold) | Ignores the guides and angle locks for as long as you hold it, so you can draw at any angle. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl` (tap) | Makes the grid finer with each tap, from 50 cm to 25 cm, 10 cm and 5 cm, then round to 50 cm again. Handy for lining up a window precisely. |
| `R` / `T` | Turns the item you're about to place by 45°. For a door or window, `R` flips the side it opens to before you click. |
| `O` | During door or window placement, steps through the available types. |
| `L` | During door or window placement, steps through the styles, for types that have them. |
| `C` | Switches between **Place once** and **Place multiple** for items, doors and windows; for fences, between **Continuous** and **Single fence**. |
| `T` | While drawing a fence: switches to a curved fence, then to freehand, then back to straight. |
| `Alt` (hold) | Places an item in a spot the Studio has marked as not allowed (red). The hint panel shows **Force place** when this is possible. |
| `Esc` | Cancels the draft or placement. |

Some tools have keys of their own, such as roofs, cabinets, spawn points and the ducts and pipes in **MEP**. The hint panel lists them as soon as the tool is active.

## Paint and sculpt

| Key | What it does |
| ----------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `Shift` (tap, while painting) | Changes how far the paint reaches, for example from one surface to the whole item, to every matching surface or to the whole room. |
| `[` and `]` | While sculpting terrain (`G`): makes the brush smaller or larger. Hold the key to keep resizing. |

## Select and move with the mouse

| Action | What it does |
| ------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Click | Selects an object. Click empty space (or press `Esc`) to clear the selection. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + click` or `Shift + click` | Adds an object to the selection, or takes it out. |
| `Shift + click` in the **Scene** tab's list | Selects everything between the last item you clicked and this one. |
| Drag | Moves the selected object. With several selected, drag any of them to move the lot. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + right-drag` | Turns the selected object; drag left or right. It snaps to 15° increments. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + right-drag` | Turns it freely, with no snapping. |

## Move the camera

| Action | What it does |
| ------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| Right-drag | Orbits around the scene. |
| Middle-drag | Slides the view sideways or up and down. |
| `Space` + left-drag | Also slides the view. |
| Scroll wheel | Zooms in and out. |
| `W` `A` `S` `D` | Slides the view, in both the 3D view and the floor plan. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + ↑` | Goes up one level. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + ↓` | Goes down one level. |
| `\` | Opens or closes the split view. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + K` | Opens the command palette. |

On a touch screen, drag with one finger to orbit (unless a tool is using that finger), pinch with two fingers to zoom and pan, and drag with three fingers to orbit at any time.

## Walkthrough

After you click **Walkthrough** in the viewer toolbar, you move through the building in first person:

| Key | What it does |
| --------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `W` `A` `S` `D` or the arrow keys | Walk. |

| `T` | Closes it. |
| `P` | Frees the mouse pointer without leaving the walkthrough, for example to take a screenshot. Click or press `P` again to carry on. |
| `Enter` | Hands what you're looking at to Luw\.ai Render AI (when you're signed in). The Studio captures the view, leaves the walkthrough and opens the **Ready to render with AI** window, which continues on app.luw\.ai. See [Render with AI](/luw.ai-studio/luw.ai-ai-tools/render-with-ai.md). |
| `Esc` | Leaves the walkthrough. |

## Point and ask

Point and ask lets you show [Archiagent.ai](/luw.ai-studio/luw.ai-ai-tools/archiagent.md) what you mean instead of describing it. It works in the 3D view.

| Key or action | What it does |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| `C` (tap) | Turns Point and ask on until you tap `C` again or press `Esc`. |
| `C` (hold) | Point and ask for as long as you hold the key. |
| Hover | Names what you're pointing at. On the inside of a wall, that's the room. |
| `Alt` (hold) | While hovering a wall from inside a room, picks the wall itself instead of the room. |
| Click | Opens a box to type what Archiagent should do with it. |
| `Shift + click` | With the box open, adds another object to the same request, or takes it out again. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + Enter` | Opens the box on whatever is under the pointer. |
| `Esc` | Closes the box; press it again to leave Point and ask. |

The same mode is on the **Point and ask** button in the bottom toolbar and next to the paperclip in the **Edit with AI** message box.

## Block editing

While you're editing the shape of a [block](/luw.ai-studio/building/blocks.md), these keys take over:

| Key | What it does |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `Tab` | Starts or stops shape editing on the selected block. |
| `1` / `2` / `3` | Switches to selecting corners (vertices), edges or faces. |
| `A` | Selects everything. `Alt + A` selects nothing. |
| `G` / `R` / `S` | Moves, rotates or scales what you've selected. |
| `E` | Pulls the selected faces outwards (extrude). |
| `I` | Insets the selected faces. |
| `Cmd/Ctrl + R` | Starts a loop cut. |
| `M` | Merges the selected corners. |
| `D` | Dissolves the selected edges. |
| `X` or `Delete` | Deletes the selection. |
| `Shift + R` | Repeats the last operation. |
| `F9` | Shows the settings of the last operation. |
| `X` / `Y` / `Z` | During a `G`, `R` or `S` change, locks it to that axis. While moving, add `Shift` to lock to the plane across that axis instead. |
| Number keys | During a `G`, `R` or `S` change, type an exact amount. |
| `Enter` / `Esc` | Confirms or cancels the move, rotation or scale in progress. |
